Carrying the Nation’s Hopes: India’s Athletes Set for Commonwealth Games 2026

With just days remaining before the Commonwealth Games 2026, India has announced a 126-member athlete contingent that will represent the nation in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026. The squad, approved by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Indian Olympic Association, features several Olympic and World Championship medal winners alongside promising young athletes aiming to strengthen India’s position on the international stage.

The Indian contingent will compete across the 10 sports included in this edition of the Games. The selection reflects a balance of experienced champions and emerging talent, with athletes chosen on the basis of recent performances and qualification standards. Officials believe the team has the potential to deliver another successful campaign despite the reduced number of sporting disciplines in the Glasgow edition.

Among the prominent Indian athletes selected are Neeraj Chopra (Athletics – Javelin Throw), Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting), Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing), Srihari Nataraj (Swimming), Dinesh Kumar Singh (Lawn Bowls), Arundhati Choudhary (Boxing), Ramesh Shanmugam (Para Athletics) and Rojit Singh Yanglem (Cycling). These athletes will lead India’s medal challenge, while several young competitors are expected to gain valuable international exposure during the Games.

India has traditionally been one of the strongest Commonwealth nations, particularly in athletics, weightlifting, boxing and para sports. Sports experts expect the country’s seasoned performers and rising stars to play a key role in maintaining India’s reputation among the leading medal-winning nations. Preparations have intensified through national training camps, with support teams focusing on peak performance ahead of the opening ceremony.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 will provide another important platform for India’s youth to showcase their talent on the global stage while inspiring the next generation of athletes. With a blend of experience, determination and youthful energy, Team India will aim to bring home medals and make the nation proud as the competition begins later this month.
