A ₹1 Lakh Phone on a Middle-Class Budget: What Is Driving Gen Z’s Premium Smartphone Craze?

For a growing section of India’s Generation Z, owning a premium smartphone—particularly an iPhone—is becoming more than just a technology choice. From students and young professionals to aspiring content creators, many young consumers from middle-income families are willing to stretch their budgets for expensive devices. Research and consumer trends suggest that the attraction is driven by a combination of camera and performance expectations, brand aspiration, design, social identity and the increasing availability of EMI financing.

The shift is particularly visible in India’s changing smartphone market. The 2025 ET-Snapchat Gen Z Index reported that Apple was gaining significant traction among Indian Gen Z consumers, particularly younger users, women and consumers outside major metropolitan cities. This indicates that premium smartphone aspiration is no longer restricted to affluent buyers in India’s biggest cities. For digitally connected young consumers, the smartphone has become one of their most visible and frequently used possessions, making the choice of device closely connected with lifestyle and personal identity.

However, the demand cannot be explained by status alone. Gen Z spends a significant part of everyday life online—creating Instagram Reels, YouTube videos, photographs and other digital content. Camera quality, video capabilities and performance therefore carry practical value for creators and young professionals. A 2026 India smartphone consumer report cited by ET Brand Equity found that 89% of surveyed users said AI features influenced their smartphone purchase decisions, while another report on the survey highlighted performance and camera quality as major considerations. For some buyers, therefore, spending more on a premium phone can be viewed as an investment in content creation, work and a long-lasting digital device rather than simply an attempt to show off.

Affordability mechanisms are also changing how young Indians access expensive technology. The same 2026 consumer research found a substantial share of buyers using EMI options to purchase higher-specification smartphones. By breaking a large upfront price into monthly payments, financing can make a device that initially appears unaffordable feel more accessible to students, salaried professionals and middle-income households. Yet this convenience also raises an important financial question: whether young consumers are purchasing premium devices because they genuinely need their capabilities or because easy credit makes aspirational consumption appear more affordable than it actually is.

Ultimately, Gen Z’s fascination with premium smartphones reflects a wider transformation in consumer culture. An iPhone can simultaneously serve as a communication device, camera, editing tool, entertainment hub, work device and, for some, a symbol of social status. The reasons for buying one therefore vary widely: one person may prioritise content quality and performance, while another may be influenced by brand image, peer circles or the desire to project a certain lifestyle. As premium technology becomes increasingly accessible through financing, India’s Gen Z is forcing the smartphone industry to confront a new reality—the phone in a young consumer’s hand is no longer viewed merely as a gadget, but increasingly as an extension of identity, ambition and digital life.
