UGC Directs Universities to Adopt SWAYAM Courses from July 2026 Semester

New Delhi: In a major step towards strengthening digital and flexible learning, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed higher education institutions across the country to include SWAYAM online courses as part of their academic curriculum for the July 2026 semester.

The advisory asks universities and colleges to identify SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that match their existing degree programmes and help students enrol within the prescribed timelines. The initiative aims to make online learning an integrated part of higher education rather than an optional add-on.

Under the UGC’s credit framework, students can earn academic credits through approved SWAYAM courses, with institutions permitted to count up to 40% of a semester’s coursework through eligible online learning modules. The move is expected to provide greater academic flexibility, encourage interdisciplinary education, and expand access to quality courses offered by leading institutions.

UGC has also encouraged institutions to coordinate with academic departments and SWAYAM nodal officers to ensure smooth implementation. Additionally, eligible colleges can conduct SWAYAM end-term examinations on their own campuses, making the assessment process more convenient for students.

The directive aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes technology-enabled learning, multiple learning pathways and wider academic choices for students.
