Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pralhad Joshi has been appointed as India’s new Union Education Minister after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. The change comes in the wake of weeks of nationwide student protests over the NEET-UG 2026 examination controversy, with the government moving swiftly to hand over the crucial education portfolio to one of its most experienced Cabinet ministers.
Before taking charge of the Education Ministry, Joshi was serving as the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy. Between 2019 and 2024, he also headed the Ministries of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines. A five-time Member of Parliament from Karnataka’s Dharwad constituency, Joshi is regarded as a seasoned administrator with decades of experience in both organisational and parliamentary roles.
Born in Karnataka, Pralhad Joshi completed his schooling in Hubballi and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Shri Kadasiddheshwar Arts College, affiliated with Karnataka University. He began his public life through social and organisational work before entering active politics and has steadily risen through the BJP ranks, serving as the party’s Karnataka state president and later becoming a key member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet.
Soon after assuming the new responsibility, Joshi said he was honoured by the trust placed in him and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party leadership for assigning him the Education Ministry at a crucial time. He stated that his priority would be to strengthen transparency, restore students’ confidence in the examination system and work towards improving the quality of education. He also stressed that the interests of students would remain at the centre of every decision taken by the ministry.
Joshi’s appointment comes at a time when the Ministry of Education is under intense public scrutiny following allegations of examination irregularities. Education experts and political observers believe his administrative experience will be tested as he oversees reforms aimed at ensuring fair, transparent and credible entrance examinations while advancing the government’s broader education agenda. The coming months are expected to be crucial for rebuilding public trust in India’s education system.
